How I Throw A Quick No Fuss Get Together

The kick off to summer is only a few weeks away and I’m already thinking about hosting a few dinner and cocktail parties both big and small. While I love a cozy winter dinner party, summer entertaining is much easier and enjoyable, and with a great group of people there’s no need to go out to restaurants or bars.  A decent amount of my entertaining is usually last-minute so I now learned to keep the pantry and bar well-stocked since you never know when you will have unexpected guests.

Since entertaining season is almost in full swing, I thought I’d share how I throw an effortless quick get-together.  I love hosting and gathering people together, but certain days it does not come easy.  Whether you are a pro at entertaining or just starting out, here are some tips that I think make a successful gathering:

Stock Up On The Right Beverages:

Let’s face it, a dinner party usually means cocktails are being served as soon as you walk in the door, at least that is what happens with my guests.  While I love the idea of starting off the night with a good cocktail, I sometimes find it easier to offer good wines to guests when time is an issueโ€”reds that work on their own or with food, some crisp whites and of course, a bunch of rosรฉ.  I still keep beer and some liquor as options, but when I don’t want to be mixing cocktails, some great wines always win.

Hit The Olive Bar:

Guests expect food right away, especially if you are starting with a drink.   When I know I’m having guests, I raid the olive bar at my local Whole Foods and load up on a variety of olives, peppadew peppers (the briny sweet and spicy peppers) and gherkins and make sure to have some dried fruits and Marcona almonds (my favorite). I pair all of those things with some cheese and a little cured meats and it’s always a big hit.

Make A Good Playlist:

Have you ever been standing in someones kitchen all night with no music and everyone’s voice echoing? It’s not that fun!  Good music is essential to entertaining.  I hang out with a mix of people of all different ages so I make sure to have a playlist  tailored to all genres with a good beat. One of my go-to entertaining playlists you can find here.

Set The Mood:

It’s so important to set the mood, even if you are only having two friends over. I light candles of all kinds around the house and stock up on fresh flowers from the grocery store. String lights out on the patio is also my favorite and makes outside summer entertaining way more special.

Plan Ahead for Your Main Course:

I used to spend so much time planning main courses and stressing over them, pouring over cookbooks and trying to make the perfect meal like Ina Garten, but I’ve learned to forget that rule and make it simple. For the warmer months, I love to grill a steak or chicken and serve it with a veggie and a side or make a big batch of carnitas.

Do you have any tips on throwing an effortless, fun gathering? If so, I’d love to hear in the comments below.
