The Best Local Shops in Rhode Island

Small shops need us more than ever right now. As much as I love Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals at some of my favorite big online retailers, there is nothing like shopping small during the holiday season. It breaks my heart to think that some of these small retailers may not be here next year due to all that is going on with Covid. I actually prefer to shop in person for most of my holiday gifts because I love seeing the merchandise in store . Plus, it puts me in a festive mood—I love seeing the way stores go all out and decorate for the season.

I know with Covid things are way different, but most of these stores are now offering online shopping with shipping all over the country. In addition, most of them are offering special deals to get you to shop with them this holiday season.

Most of you may know these Rhode Island businesses, but some of you may not. I am still finding my way around this little state so I'm sure there are some other gems I still need to explore. Either way, I know most people want to support local this season, so I'm sharing a roundup of a few small retailers to support.

Where to Shop Small in Rhode Island:

Queen of Hearts Modern Love -- This shop is always one of my favorites around the holidays. They have great winter hats, gloves sweaters and clothing, but I also adore their home gifts such as candles, barware and glassware.

Symposium Books -- This sun-filled bookstore on Westminster Street does a great job at curating book selections, making it easy to find a unique gift.

Craftland -- The shelves in this shop are stocked with local items from artisans in Rhode Island and Southern New England where you can find a unique gift for just about everyone on your list.

Berk's On Thayer -- Berk's has been on Thayer Street for over 40 years. I love their sneaker and boot selection, but they also have stylish sweaters, jackets and activewear at a great price.

Stock-- Every year, I head to this shop on Hope Street for gifts for the home cook and those that love to entertain. It never disappoints!

J.Marcel - This shop carries on-trend winter accessories and apparel as well as jewelry and bags.

Wendy Brown Home -- Beautiful linens and home accessories are the main feature at this Wayland Square shop, but they also have great baby gifts, bath items and beautiful throws.

Flipp Salon & Apothecary -- This all natural hair salon has a stocked apothecary with good-for-you items such as facial serums, sea salt spray, teas and tinctures. I especially love the plant-based Botanic Providence line from owner Jo-Anna Cassino, which is made in small batches here in Rhode Island.

Coastal 41 -- I always find a great gift in this shop and especially love their personalized glasses, Farm+Sea diffusers, cocktail napkins and jewelry.

Barrington Books -- This is my go-to spot for teacher and children's gifts during the holidays and the staff are always helpful and good at recommending items.

Cerulean -- The shelves are stocked with items from local artisans and you can always find a gift for anyone on your holiday list.

Nick Haus -- This tiny shop in Warren stocks art and antiques, which frequently rotates.

Epilogues -- I found this Bristol shop a year ago and it always has pretty items for the home.

The Peyton Co. -- I've mentioned this shop here before, but it's my favorite for clean beauty and skincare made in small batches on site.

Cory Farms Past and Presents -- This shop always surprises me and has great stuff for the home as well as for little ones on your list.

Groundswell Garden + Home -- Located in Tiverton, this new shop carries a great selection of candles, ceramics and pretty glassware.
