The Best Products for Fine, Color-Treated Hair

My hair is kind of basic. It’s fine, straight and highlighted, and looks better when it has a little grit to it. Heavy products don’t work for me and I often play with my hair often, keeping it up one minute then down then back up in a knot again.

I often keep my hair care products simple, but always make sure to use products that protect my color and leave my hair healthy and soft without the weight. After summer, I tend to up my hair game and introduce products that add more moisture, help with strengthening (I have a lot of breakage), clean the roots and boost and protect color. Most importantly, if you have dry hair or bad split ends get a trim. I personally think products work better when you have a clean slate and the dead, broken hair is gone. Plus, it looks healthier and your color will look better.

So, here are my four current hair picks for healthy locks and color:

SHAMPOO

I usually use a shampoo that is geared towards color-treated hair and prefer one that is not too heavy and moisturizing, but one that cleans and protects.  I recently swooped up Kérastase Bain Chromatique Riche from the brand’s Reflection line and been so happy with it.  It contains rice bran oil and vitamin E, UV filters and works to neutralize water so hair color lasts longer. They make a sulfate-free version, which I will try next time around as I usually use a sulfate-free shampoo, but so far this one has worked out well.

SCALP BOOSTER

Treating your scalp is all the rage these days.  My scalp tends to get oily, not dry, and it can trigger lackluster locks.  My friend gave me a sample of the new salt scrub from goop, which smells insanely good and was an amazing spa like experience in the shower, however, I felt my hair still lacked body and movement afterwards.  So I sought out a scalp mask and scrub that would work for my fine, oily roots.  I decided upon the Christophe Robin volumizing paste, which for fine, color-treated hair has been amazing. First, the look of it is a little off-putting, it kinds of looks like mud, but it smells like roses and contains Moroccan clay and natural granules to soak up oil, cleanse the scalp and add volume at the roots.  I only use it once a week and after my hair always feels and look great. If your hair is thicker and less oily I recommend the hair scrub by goop.

MASK IT

My new favorite drugstore find is the Garnier Fructis Strengthening 1-Minute mask. It smells like bananas and is 98 percent naturally derived, but I love that it works in a minute and great for dry, fried ends.  I use this when my hair needs an extra moisture boost or if I went overboard on heat styling. It has made a huge difference on split ends and leaves hair with a nice shine.

CONDITIONER FOR COLOR

I am constantly changing my conditioner and prefer one that adds moisture, prevent color from fading and won’t weigh hair down. Within the past year, I’ve been trying to use more natural products on both my skin and hair and love hair products from Rahua. Their pale violet hue Color Full Conditioner prevents fading and brassiness and leaves hair glossy, containing nourishing omega-9 fatty acids and Morete fruit and flaxseed oils.
