Beauty Trends for 2020

Happy New Year! Hope your January is off to a great start and you are feeling ready to tackle some exciting things in the new year. This is my first post of the year, because I had some big deadlines last week and lots of distractions this week. I know… excuses, excuses.

I was on The Rhode Show, a local lifestyle TV show based here in Rhode Island, doing a beauty segment on Hot New Trends for 2020, which was really fun. I always love sharing beauty product recommendations and ones that are helpful and good for achieving some new looks are a plus.  I hope you check it out here

It was a lot of fun to start the year off talking beauty and it had me thinking about my own routine, which is kind of been the same for a while. The new year is always good to shake things up whether it’s buying a new product for winter skin or a special lip gloss.   Trends come and go every year, but I love how we are going back to more of the basics (bye, fake eyelashes) and simplifying things in our routine.

So, here are some trends I think we’re going to see in 2020 and the products to go with them.

  1. Glittery Eyes — Disco 70s eyes are back paired with fresh, clean skin and minimal makeup elsewhere. You can go subtle or full on glitter on the lid, but make sure the rest of your face is soft, so the focus is on the eyes.  I love these Smith + Cult Glitterbaby liquid shadows because they are easy to apply and buildable. You can apply them to the entire lid, line the eye or even do a floating liner and they come in a range of colors.
  2. Better Skin, Less Makeup — We’re going to see less of an emphasis on covering imperfections and more on good, glowy skin. There are many skincare products out there that work on helping achieve great skin, but at times it can be overwhelming. One thing, most derms and estheticians agree on is to add in a chemical exfoliator (ditch the physical ones) that penetrate the layers of the skin for more glowy, radiant skin.  Glycolic acid is the holy grail when it comes to exfoliating the outer layer of the skin and helps with scarring, hyperpigmentation and unclogging the pores . GOOP Beauty makes an overnight peel called GoopGlow, which 15 percent glycolic acid and tropical fruit acids to reveal better skin. You can apply the pad to the face, neck and chest after cleansing and sleep with it on till the morning.  Something a bit more gentle, but still effective at sloughing away the dead skin and boosting your glow is the Shiffa Tri-Acid Radiance Peel, made with three different acids — glycolic, lactic and salicylic — that work together to keep skin clear and more radiant. This peel is like a mask and stays on for 10 minutes, and then you wash it off. It can be great to use if you want a quick boost before an event.
  3. CBD in beauty is going to get BIG — I’m sure you have seen or heard about CBD and you will start seeing more of this ingredient in your creams, soaps and serums in the new year. CBD in beauty products comes from the hemp plant, not the marijuana plant, so you are not going get that psyschoactive effect.  You will get anti-inflammatory and calming properties, which are great for those with acne, rosace and eczema. A line that recently came across my desk is Cannuka, and it contains five products all with a high levels of CBD and Manuka honey from New Zealand, which is anti-bacterial. I just starting using the eye balm, which feels nice under my eyes and has not irritated them, and the skin balm, which I have been slathering on my hands, neck and chest before bed every night.
  4. Natural Looking Lashes — I wish I had long feathery lashes all the time, but that is not the case. I’ve thought about extensions, but I don’t have the time or patience to make monthly appointments.  I’ve seen great looking extensions, but have also seen way more bad looking ones, so I’m happy to hear that natural looking lashes are coming back.  Skin again is going to be the focus with a few swipes of a lenghtening or volumizing mascara and you’ll be good to go. I am loving this new mascara from L’Oreal, which really opens up the eye.
  5. Vinyl Lips — We are going to see lips shine again, but not in a sticky, tacky way.   Some glosses I love that deliver shine and moisture are NYX Butter Glosses, Neutrogena Hydroboost and Charlotte Tilbury.

What are some trends you are excited about in 2020 and what are you excited to see go?
